The collection and preparation of blood and other specimens for testing purposes is the job of a phlebotomist. In the course of their duties, a phlebotomist is also responsible for record keeping and the maintenance of collection equipment and areas. The state of New York has chosen not to certify those who pursue a career in phlebotomy. Once you have completed coursework successfully, you may choose to take the National Healthcare Association exam in order to increase your job opportunities, but the state does not require this.
In order to work in the field of phlebotomy in the state of New York, you should obtain an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree in either life science or medical technology. Many labs and hospitals will provide phlebotomy training on site. Once you have completed coursework, you may become certified as a phlebotomist through the American Society for Clinical Pathologists, but this is not a requirement. By obtaining this certification, you will be able to pursue more job opportunities as some employers do require that you take this step.

Skilled laboratory professionals are expected to be in demand over the next ten years with the market increasing by approximately 10-20%. This is due to the increase in the elderly population which tends to need more laboratory work due to a rise in medical problems. Independent medical laboratories will likely offer the most opportunities as hospitals are choosing to make use of outside labs rather than maintaining them on site. The salary outlook for this field is also good. One can expect to make anywhere between $30,000 and $35,000 a year working as a phlebotomist.
