Working as a Traveling Phlebotomy Technician

As you are likely aware, the phlebotomy technician works in various health care settings such as private labs, blood banks, hospitals, and other facilities to take blood and fluid samples from patients. The unique training which a phlebotomy technician receives truly prepares them to work in nearly any type of environment. As such, after finishing training and entering the work force, for some phlebotomists each and every day can mean a new workplace.

The floating or mobile phlebotomy technician is one who actually travels to various locations to attend to patients and collect samples. This can provide for a uniquely challenging and dynamic working atmosphere which many individuals find exciting and rewarding.

The mobile phlebotomy technician may travel for several different reasons. Quite a few are dispatched by labs or hospitals to obtain samples from critically ill patients who are unable to leave the home. Additionally, many blood banks conduct mobile blood drives, which you’re probably familiar with. These traveling units require a phlebotomy technician to be on site regardless of where the particular blood drive is held. Occasionally, the traveling phlebotomist will operate in remote rural areas in which health care services are limited.

As you might expect, the duties of the mobile phlebotomy technician tend to be very similar to those located in static environments. They also are required to follow the same rigorous standards for sample collection and prevention of infectious diseases regardless of where they might be operating.

They do, however, often face unique working challenges which are not typical of phlebotomists working in other settings. For instance, the lack of a traditional clinical environment can impose some difficulties. Within a mobile environment, space is very limited. Additionally, supplies are at a premium and once in the field, the traveling phlebotomy technician must be prepared to be completely self-sufficient for any task or situation that may arise throughout the day.

There are great benefits to this type of work as well. The mobile phlebotomy technician is able to provide services to a very large number of patients. Therefore there tends to be a great sense of pride and accomplishment among traveling phlebotomists. They also tend to face a less monotonous and routine work day and therefore can accumulate a great deal of experience within a short period of time.

Working as a phlebotomist is not for everyone. However, if you’re considering this exciting career and are interested in a very unique working environment, look into becoming a mobile phlebotomy technician.
