A phlebotomy technician has a world of opportunity open to him or her. Once certification in this field has been obtained, jobs can be found in many places. A phlebotomy technician can expect to make anywhere between $12.50 and $13.00 an hour with basic training. Work your way up in this field and you can make as much as $59,800 a year if you choose to work for the Federal Executive Branch. This will all depend on your training and how far you are willing to go to progress in your field.
If you wish to obtain an entry-level job as a phlebotomy technician, most employers will require that you have a bachelor’s degree. This degree should be in medical technology or a life science. Some employers will train you while others will offer a position based on your education and on-the-job training. If you choose to go the bachelor’s degree route, you will study biological sciences, mathematics, chemistry, statistics and microbiology. You may also be required to take classes in business, computer applications and management.
Before studying to become a phlebotomy technician, learn which licensing requirements have been put into place in your state. Often you will be required to have not only a bachelor’s degree, but you will also be required to pass an exam. This information can be found at your State department of health or the board of occupational licensing. Your employment chances increase if you have been certified by one of the recognized professional associations.
Associations which offer certification for phlebotomy technicians include the American Medical Technologists, the Board of Registry of the American Association of Bioanalysts, the Board of Registry of the American Society for Clinical Pathology and the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel. Each association has its own requirements for certification. Be sure you know what these are and which ones are accepted by employers in your state.
