If you are looking for an opportunity to work in health care in a field that is expected to have a much higher growth than average, you may want to consider working as a phlebotomy technician.  A phlebotomy technician collects, examines and analyzes, body fluids and tissues to help to detect, diagnosis, and treat diseases.

If you choose to continue your education to become a clinical laboratory technologist, you will have to receive a four year degree in medical technology or one of the life sciences.  A phlebotomy technician can advance to become Clinical Laboratory Technologists with additional education and training.

Many of the phlebotomy technician positions are located in a hospital, laboratory, or doctor’s office. Working conditions vary depending on the setting that the position is in.  The jobs can require a lot of standing, exposure to some infectious diseases, and shift and weekend work.  As technology change and more and more of the complex testing is able to be done outside of a laboratory, there will be more and more demand for technicians as well as technologists in the private sector.

The average salary for a phlebotomy technician is $35,000 – $38,000 dollars depending upon the location of the position and whether it is located in a private or public sector.  The average salary for a technologist is approximately $15,000 higher than a technician.
